DR.PHILS CORNER

Great news for all you root canal lovers……they just got better! Yes folks, the horror stories we’ve all heard over the years are a thing of the past! Root Canals are now done in a single visit with slick instruments that make the treatment quicker, easier and pain-free.

Root canal techniques have evolved over the decades thanks to ongoing research and development. These new tools (files that look like mini- augers) allow everyone to have a “wow” experience. Consider this, what once took dentists over 3 hours can now be done better and in some cases less than one hour. Isn’t that amazing!

I use the newest and best methods and technology. My advanced training and years of experience assure my clientele and referred patients from all over the island that they will be treated in a comfortable and confident manner. You’re in good hands with me and my team.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

We would like to thank all our patients who refer their friends and family, it is a real honor that you suggest us for their dental needs.

We started our “Refer a Smile” program this summer and many of you have been rewarded with a gas gift card. It is so easy, refer a friend, family member, co-worker or anyone (for a new patient exam) and we will reward you with a gas gift card. Make sure the person you refer lets us know it was you who suggested our office.

We are also looking for testimonials for our website. Our office goal is to make all of our patients feel comfortable, relaxed and pleased with the choices they have made. If we have done something that has really pleased you and you would like others to know about it please send us an email and we will post it on our website. In addition you can visit us at www.canpages.ca, search dentist in Comox BC, click on reviews and add your say. Word of mouth is the best advertisement and the greatest compliment.

NO WATER......NO WORRIES!

Following the recent “boil water” advisory here in the Comox Valley, our office received many questions from several of our patients. If you weren’t in or around our clinic in September to ask us yourself, here is how we were able to stay open during this advisory.

Although it is not a mandatory requirement in BC, many years ago our clinic chose to add an independent water bottle system to each of our rooms. This means that each dental operatory bypasses the main water supply. Each day the bottles are cleaned and refilled, we can then add sterile, distilled or saline water. In addition, specific tablets are added to maintain our units and waterlines from any accumulation of bacteria that may build up. We also have daily routines that include chemical treatment and draining and air purging regimens to keep everything clean.

Hopefully we won’t experience another water scare in the valley, but if we do, you can be assured that we will continue to maintain the highest safety standards.

FROM YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD HYGIENIST

Winston Doggie Dental

If you’ve seen me in the past 4 months then you know I have a fabulous new puppy, Winston (see super cute photo). Winston is 51/2 months old, loves digging at the beach and all things muddy. She is also getting really good at having her teeth brushed 3 times a week.

So I was on Facebook today and there was an update on the Canadian Dental Hygienist Association page stating: Are we reminding our clients that their pets oral care is important as well? Well, I can say honestly the answer is no. You know me; I never talk about anything but flossing.

So in the spirit of having the bestest puppy ever, and because that update on Facebook must be a sign, I’m writing about Oral Care for Dogs today. (I’ll probably hear it from the Cat lovers after this).

By the time dogs are 3 years old, most dogs are already showing signs of gums disease. As a result, dogs may be at risk for some of the same problems that chronic infection can cause in people, including heart, liver and kidney problems.

For a healthy Doggie mouth:

  1. Get your dog regular exams and cleanings. Winston loves the vet.
  2. Start brushing your dog’s teeth as a puppy. We mostly chewed the brush didn’t we Winston?
  3. Start brushing gradually and gently. If you sing to Winston, she gets very relaxed.
  4. Use toothpaste specifically for dogs. Winston’s breath always smells chicken-fresh.
  5. Use a pet-specific toothbrush. Pink please!
  6. Make sure to brush the back teeth. Is there supposed to be grass and dirt in here?
  7. Make tooth brushing fun and rewarding. Always playtime with monkey afterwards.
 Winston Doggie Dental

It’s true that some dogs just don’t want their teeth brushed, and that’s OK. But don’t give up too soon. About 80% of dogs will allow you to brush their teeth, even older dogs.

And if old dogs can learn new tricks, then so can many of you non-flossers out there too. (You didn’t really think I wouldn’t mention flossing, did you?)

TIN GRIN CUP AND FOOD BANK CHALLENGE

For the past thirteen years, Shoreline Orthodontics has hosted the Tin Grin Cup held at Crown Isle Golf Course. It is a way for the dental professional community to support local child development agencies and also provide continuing education to dentists and their teams. It is a full day event with a lecture in the morning and then in the afternoon we are treated to golf and fun and in return we are asked to make a donation to a local children’s charity. We have attended many times in the past and gained important information which we then apply in our clinic. We have fun spending time with each other on the golf course outside of the office setting.

In the spirit of giving, we are collecting donations for the food bank, please drop a donation of a nonperishable item to our office between Nov 1 and Dec 17th. We are challenging other dental offices in the valley to a friendly competition to see who can come up with the largest donation by weight. Please be generous to those who are finding it difficult this time of year, and help our office win this challenge!

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

We all have our reasons for not getting things done, whether it is money, insurance, fear or neglect.

Waiting to have treatment completed may cost you more out of pocket in the long run as decay could become bigger, therefore causing the filling to be bigger, or possibly requiring a crown, or worse case an extraction and replacement of the missing tooth. Talk to Carmen with regards to payment options for your upcoming appointments, we will find a way to make your appointment work with your finances.

Dr. Phil’s Corner

A warm welcome to all our new patients this past year and a big hello to our existing clientele.

In the next month or two, we will be adding a video clip to our website which will also appear on our “Canpages” advertisement.

Comox Valley Dental Office

In addition, we will be appearing in the newspapers and airing radio commercials about our services. The aim is to inform the public of the many dental procedures we offer. We routinely do specialized treatments that many local dentists would otherwise refer down island e.g. root canals, implants and surgeries.

You can share the news with your friends, relatives and colleagues (who may not wish to travel so far) that they do not need a referral to see us for these specialized appointments, and it would be our pleasure to care for them as we do for you.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Dr. Phil Nasralla

Another Year Gone By

As with years before, the Christmas season is upon us and we are counting down the days in a frantic rush to get all our shopping done. However, as I put these words to writing, I cannot help but think of Oprah and her mantra, "What are you grateful for?"

I am grateful for my wife and children. I am grateful for our health and our home. I am grateful for our friends and the opportunity to live in our beautiful valley that is part of our great nation. I am grateful for our business and the talented team who help run it; and of course I am grateful for you, our patients who have become part of our extended family. I thank you all for placing your trust and loyalty in our hands, we truly appreciate it. We look forward to serving your needs in 2009 but for now we wish you a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Cheers and Keep Smiling,
Phil Nasralla

The Pure Power Mouthguard - Breaking News from Dr. Phil Nasralla

The Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM), the technological wonder that is making big news by enabling star athletes to perform at unprecedented levels, is now being offered by Comox dentist, Dr. Phil Nasralla. The revolutionary mouth guard holds an athlete's jaw in a position that allows the jaw and neck muscles to relax and instantly delivers improved body strength, balance, and flexibility.

Getting the right bite for sports

New mouthguard also has other health benefits

On the golf course or on the slopes, the perfect bite has the power to significantly improve athletic performance, according to Comox dentist Dr. Phil Nasralla.

While the pros are already on top of the latest in neuromuscular dentistry, which aims to correct overbites by aligning the muscles and jaw, Nasralla said he saw a place for the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM) in the Comox Valley.

"I see it fitting in just about anywhere. It could benefit anyone at any level. It doesn't matter your ability or sport," said Nasralla, who has practised in the Valley for nearly 15 years.

Developed by Canadian dentist Dr. Anil Makkar, Nasralla said the PPM catered to athletes who wanted to excel in strength, balance, speed and flexibility, but it was also beneficial for people experiencing physical strain at work and at play.

Implants have arrived

Dr.Nasralla is pleased to announce that he is now placing dental implants for his patients. Implants offer a whole new realm of treatment options to restoring one's smile to optimum health. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root (titanium screw) and is used in dentistry to support restorations that replace one or more teeth in the form of crowns, bridges and dentures.

The earliest example of dental implants (sea shells) have been found in Mayan jawbones dating circa 600 A.D. However modern implant dentistry is credited to Dr.Branemark, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon who in the 1950's was conducting research on rabbits. One day he observed that titanium metal placed in the bone was not easily retrieved and consequently the bone had grown and adhered to the titanium surfaces (osseointegration). Dr. Branemark carried out further studies both in animal and human subjects and confirmed this phenomenon of osseointegration with regular consistency. In the past 40 years over 7 million Branemark type dental implants have been placed in people around the world.
